A message from Rachel

Whether starting a new job or taking a class about a new topic you haven't encountered before, don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. Coworkers, fellow classmates, your professors, your manager are here to support you, you are not alone. More often than not, someone else (including senior leaders) likely has the same question as you!

A valuable skill

One of the most valuable skills I regularly use on the job is effective communication. This skill was first nurtured through my early experiences in middle school speech and debate, but it was at Wellesley that I refined and expanded it in a professional context. Opportunities such as presenting class projects, demoing at hackathons, leading club meetings, hosting workshops, and tutoring allowed me to practice and enhance my ability to convey ideas clearly and purposefully. In my current role, day-to-day I apply this skill in various ways—adapting presentations to diverse audiences, speaking with customers, translating business and product requirements for engineers, leading work streams on go-to-market strategies alongside sales and marketing teams, and celebrating and documenting successes during one-on-one meetings with my manager. Beyond the workplace, I continue to hone this skill when attending networking events, coffee chats, hosting workshops, and speaking engagements.
