A message from Rose
I resisted doing certain things I wanted because I couldn’t see how to make it work in that moment. Don’t exclude yourself from opportunities just because every single detail doesn’t fall into place immediately.
Valuable Skill they regularly use
These days I present to organisational leaders a lot, which involves constructing narratives about the work my teams are doing in a way that is accessible to them. The combines a number of skills - most notably, some of the early childhood literacy training I did in the Education program, which gave me experience breaking down new concepts for people with very little context. I’ve used those skills throughout the year to help provide better technical support, write better documentation, and now I use it to talk to executives who know very little about what IT does.
Note from Rose
I just want to note (as I did to Belle when she reached out) that I am not officially an alum. I withdrew from Wellesley for mental health reasons in 2014 and started my career shortly after, without a degree. I’m a strategy RPG gamer with an on/off YouTube presence, I have a podcast about the specific niche of IT that I do (SaaS Showdown), I live in Chicago with my two cats, and I’m currently learning how to keep plants alive.
